The Strong® is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded by Margaret Woodbury Strong who, upon her death in 1969, left most of her assets to establish a museum. Since then, The Strong’s Board of Trustees has expanded both services and facilities in order to provide a multi-faceted array of interpretive and educational services to a diverse audience of adults, families, children, students, teachers, scholars, collectors, and others around the globe.
Today The Strong is funded in part by the Margaret Woodbury Strong Trust but depends increasingly on private contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations, as well as public funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), a State agency.
The Strong is accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM) and is an institutional member of AAM, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM), and the Museum Association of New York (MANY).
